VERY USEFUL SCAMP GEAR

Gear For Small Boat Sailors Created By Small Boat Sailors

As a life long sailor and more specifically a small open boat sailor I have observed there are many pieces of equipment and sewn systems that are not produced or available.

Once we have a boat and begin to look at actual use either day sailing or making short cruises it may occur to us that for many small boats items such as covers, seat cushions, bags, sail covers and tents don't exist. Typically small boat sailors have to find a sewing shop or sail loft for little jobs that often don't make much sense to the designer, sailmaker or seam sewer. They don’t do what we do, they try and interpret our needs and some times get it right but at a premium price. They also may shuttle your little tent job to the back burner due to their bread and butter sailmaking or powerboat cover business.

Form and Function

Small boat sailors and cruisers like me are looking for gear that meets our specific boats, personal needs, preferences and more specifically the demands of the place where we are cruising. I adhere to what I think of as the F Squared philosophy of creating small boats and small boat specific gear. If the form is good then the function follows and vice versa.

I believe in functional design based on strength, simplicity and versatility all leading to good form. To this mix I add "Is this peice of gear safe to use and can it add to overall safety."

Small Boat Safety

You may ask what would our three pouch halyard, compass, radio utility hang bag and similar items have to do with safety. The bag will ensure your halyard and down haul will be ready to run free at any moment. They come out snarl free allowing instant dropping of the sail. If you get caught in building conditions this may be more important than first imagined. Having a handy place for your halyard and down haul still allows space for binoculars, hand bearing compass, sunscreen, snacks or whatever you would like. Once we set out in small boats our hands can be busy managing sail and many other details all at the same time. I believe in having common use items conveniently at hand. Having to heave to or stop to open a hatch to fish gear out from below can be time consuming and problematic in some conditions.

Design Based On Experience

Over the years I have learned much and have designed, built and field tested many pieces of equipment including "sewn gear" that has allowed me to sail and explore by small boat in greater comfort and safety. The gear and tents below are all field tested and have been refined over time.

In 2016 I introduced a few of these items for sale to sailors who like me couldn't find just what they were looking for and am happy to report there are SCAMP's sailing today in greater comfort and safety with Pocket Yacht tents, boast covers, cushions, Re Entry Slings and more.

Contact me through the "Take Action" button so we can discuss what you are looking for. If you are not a SCAMP sailor and in need of a custom cockpit tent, seat cushions, road covers or other needs then lets talk.

HAND MADE TO ORDER
All of the irtems listed below are custom made to order as each SCAMP is likely just a little different and I want to be sure the tent or other item you purchase fits precisely. I have a good method of using your photos and a tape measure to detail some elements of a tent fit for example. Other items such as seat cushions, bags, covers etc are stock unless there is some feature you wish to have incorporated.

HOW TO PLACE AN ORDER
Since some items may need some custom fitting because of how you have set your SCAMP up then it is best for you to contact me before ordering so we can talk about what you need, your boat set up, etc. If your boat is a stock SCAMP you can go ahead and order. If it is a modified boat it is best to talk first.

SCHEDULING
Once you have decided on what you wish to purchase and we have discussed any fitting questions you will need to pay for the order in full enabling me to order the needed materials and set a schedule for completion of your work. You can do this through our web site payment system. I will explain what is needed in terms of measurements and photos of your boat if it is not stock.

SCAMP SEWN GEAR

Here is a list of items we currently offer on a custom basis.

SCAMP TENTS
We offer two versions of SCAMP cockpit tents and have the ability to fit each to your boat without being on site. We do this through collaboration with you, your photos and your tape measure. I will work with you to let you know exactly what needs to be measured and photographed. Once you have your tent you can access a simple installation video and read through the written installation instructions that come with your new tent. Fitting is easy and important as we design our tents to offer all weather protection and following the installation guide will ensure you and wind and weather tight.

SOUTHERN CROSS THREE POLE This is our roomiest SCAMP tent and best suited for sheltered anchorages, marinas, etc. This is due to the high profile of the tent and resultant windage. This is also our most comfortable tent allowing two people to move around the cockpit, sit upright on the seats and enjoy life together for days on end. It is ideally suited for any sailor using bench top sleeping for two and ideal for the solo sailor who wishes to live large!

SCAMP EXPEDITION This tent is the ultimate in simplicity and and function for the solo sailor. I prefer tents without poles and do understand why some sailors like poles. I opt for the simplest set up possible, which is what is usually needed when dinghy cruising. Built of Weathermax cloth this tent was designed to be set up in less than three minutes regardless of wind and weather conditions. Adding one or more poles when it blowing hard is a complication. This tent is water tight, quiet in high winds, roomy, bug proof and it stows in a small bag. I used this tent in the most extreme of conditions. It survived hundreds of williwaws and is as good as the day it was new. Sometimes the simplest sloutions are the best and this tent embodies what I refer to as "F Squared Design." If the designed Function is good then the Form will follow. This is a solid, no nonsense comfortable bullet proof tent. (Recommended for SCAMP's with footwells)

  The Voyager

The Voyager

SCAMP VOYAGER The Voyager is my latest thinking and design of the simplest most versatile tent possible. The Voyager is built of Weathermax and like the Expedition tent it sets up in minutes, is quiet and bone dry. The difference is the ability to multi pitch the tent in 12 different configurations. This is possible with the build in of two double YKK Vision zippers and an internal batten. Like the Expedition the Voyager is bug proof. (Recommended for SCAMP's with footwells).

SCAMP SEAT CUSHIONS Our seat cushion is not your ordinary run of the mill soft seat. Our cushions are designed for rugged use and are uniquely suited to small boat use. Each cushion incorporates a fastening system ensuring that as you sail your cushions stay in place. We offer seat cushion slip covers for day use, a great way to keep your cushions looking sharp.

SCAMP DRY FLOOR SYSTEM Open boat cruisers face a common challenge. How to set up for life in a wet cockpit? Here is my tried and true answer, the SCAMP Dry Floor System. This clever form fit waterproof floor comes in pairs (so you always have a dry floor) and is simple to use and best of all it works! Once again a design I developed for an extreme environment, which makes life for any small boat cruiser a delight regardless of conditions. Sail in, drop anchor in the rain, set up your tent and once under the tent lay out the Dry Floor for a snug, dry night aboard. No need to live in a wet cockpit or one that is still damp after mopping up water.

SMALL CRAFT RE-ENTRY SLING SYSTEM (Patent Pending)
Perhaps our most important piece of small boat gear. In the event of a capsize successful righting is something everyone should practice. If your boat is a sound design and you have mastered the moves to get her upright then the event is not over. Re-entry is one of the most over looked yet important elements of a successful self rescue. My Re-Entry Sling System is a simple, reliable method for getting back into your boat. Use of the pre rigged Sling System means that anyone can re-enter regardless of fitness level.

Above is a video clip of some of the original testing work, (this is not the finished system). I am instructing from shore. I developed this system for my own use and now a number of boats are using it. The system has been refined and is available to all sailors with easy installation and use instructions. This system works! I know because I have used it not only for re-entry but for righting a capsized boat.

The Re-Entry Sling prototype in action. It is the orange strap and hardware visible on the starboard side (yes it is hanging off the boat as I had just been demonstrating it's use). Each Re-Entry Sling package comes with two multiple adjustment slings and hardware. I wouldn't sail a SCASMP without this simple reliable safety measure installed and on the ready. I have taught many sailors how to successfully use the Sling during SCAMP Skills Weekends. Anyone can use the sling regardless of upper body strength. (Deb Colvin Photo)
